The Latex Ball

A brand identity for a queer ballroom event centered on performance, movement, and self-expression.

The Latex Ball is an annual event rooted in the history of queer ballroom. I developed a brand system that celebrated the vibrancy of ballroom while honoring its cultural legacy and historical roots.

The Problem

As queer ballroom culture gains mainstream attention, many new audiences overlook its history and pioneers, risking the erasure of its cultural depth and significance as a safe space for queer expression.

The Process

I conducted cultural research inspired by ballroom’s houses, icons, and legends, refining sketches and word maps into a full visual system. Each decision emphasized the people and houses that form ballroom’s core.

The Solution

The final system featured bold, colorful visuals that embodies ballroom’s drama and pride. It highlights community leaders and invites audiences to engage with its deeper history and legacy.

Reflection

The project celebrates ballroom’s inclusivity and resilience while underscoring the importance of culturally informed design. With more time, I’d expand the educational and campaign components further.
